Renault has announced a new compact SUV called Renault Austral – it will replace the Kadjar. Now the first spyshot pictures of the Austral have appeared on test drives. We have all the information for you!
The Renault model family is getting a new addition. The Renault Austral is coming, that’s what the Kadjar is going to do. The new compact SUV has now been photographed during test drives for the first time. So far, Renault has only published a less informative teaser image.

Exterior design
Renault is not only giving its second-generation compact SUV Kadjar a new look but also a new name – Kadjar becomes Austral. The Renault Austral is currently still on test drives and is still quite heavily glued. It shouldn’t stay that way for long, because Renault has already released a first teaser picture – but you can’t see much of the optics on it.
The Renault Austral is said to remind of the warmth and colors of the south – its name comes from the Latin (lat. Australis) and means “south”.
Accordingly, the focus of the Austral is traveling, for which it is perfectly suited as an SUV with supposedly balanced and harmonious driving comfort. With a length of 4.51 meters, it will face a lot of competition in the compact SUV segment, but it would like to outdo modern technologies and its thirst for adventure.
The Erlkönig pictures show that the name Austral is also accompanied by a fundamental change in appearance. The Austral is reminiscent of the Megane E-Tech, which is the first vehicle to feature the new Renault design of the future. The slim LED headlights and an inwardly curved radiator grille can be seen despite the strong camouflage, as well as completely redesigned air intakes.
Technical data & engines
A lot is changing not only visually, but also in terms of drive technologies. For the Austral, there should be more engines to choose from than ever before. It will stand on the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance-built modular CMF-C platform, which was also used for the new Nissan Qashqai. This means that all forms of hybrid drives are possible, which means that the Austral could theoretically also come as a plug-in version.
The Austral is likely to receive a variant of the ETech system as used by the Captur. That would be a 1.6-liter gasoline engine with an electric motor and a 9.8 kWh battery, which provides a total of 160 hp.
Renault Austral Prices and the start of sales
The manufacturer has communicated that the public premiere should take place in spring 2022. It is not yet known what the Renault Austral will cost. The prices will certainly be a bit higher than the current Kadjar. This currently costs 28,600 euros – that means that at least 32,000 euros should be due for the Austral.
