The Opel Astra Sports Tourer 2022 is seen with all the arguments of a family member in front of an SUV. A real alternative to trendy cars?
We do not come to discover anything if we say that the SUV is the fashionable car, the most attractive and comfortable category for the bulk of the population. Due to its spaciousness and its greater trunk volume, the SUV has displaced saloons and, above all, family members, who offered these arguments in the most classic forms.
However, some still prefer family members. And more specifically the compact family, like this Opel Astra Sports Tourer. Vehicles that significantly increase the load capacity of the compact from which it derives and that, in addition, continue to offer a more agile behavior and close to the ground than the ubiquitous SUVs.
Therefore, it is not surprising that Opel puts concrete figures to its family and emphasizes its dimensions and liters of the luggage compartment. Thus, the new Astra Sports Tourer arrives at 4.64 meters long (27 centimeters more than the compact one), 1.86 meters wide, and 1.46 meters high. The wheelbase gains five centimeters of the wheelbase and, despite everything, it is still six centimeters shorter than the outgoing model, as a result of being built on the new PSA Group platform.
But although it is slightly shorter than the previous generation, the station wagon continues to provide huge arguments in its trunk. The Opel Astra Sports Tourer starts with 604 liters of luggage compartment, expandable to 1,634 with the seats folded down, which can do so at 40:20:40. Even the plug-in hybrid versions are competitive, with 548 liters of cargo and 1,574 liters with the seats folded down. For added comfort, the combustion versions have two positions for the boot floor and a third at 45 degrees.
OPEL ASTRA SPORTS TOURER, THE CHANGES, AND THEIR ENGINES
As expected, the new body of this Opel Astra Sports Tourer has its aesthetic constraints. The car is identical in the front three-quarters but at the rear, the windows have been redesigned, a large D-pillar appears and the muscle on the rear wheels is more prominent. The same happens with the ribs of the rear bumper, more marked to offer a more proportionate vehicle and give more packaging.
Inside, the compact’s very modern cabin remains. The two central screens will continue to be joined by the circular structure that rotates around the driver, the central tunnel remains equally prominent but also usable. Android and Apple compatibility is included, and heated driver seats with air conditioning are available if you opt for the Nappa trim.
As for its engines, the Opel Astra Sports Tourer comes with the engines that we already see in its compact version and the Peugeot 308 SW. Thus, the combustion engines make an appearance with two gasoline 1.2 three-cylinder 110 and 130 hp or a diesel 1.5 tetracylinder 130 hp. The plug-in hybrid option will be, for now, the 180 hp and later we will see the 225 hp. Of its prices, nothing has been said, other than that they will be made official in early 2022. Currently, the compact Opel Astra starts at 22,700 euros.
