The Toyota GR Corolla was presented – and the design is brutal! In the US, everyone is eagerly awaiting the market launch of the GR Corolla. The fact that the car is about complete sportiness cannot be overlooked. In Europe you still have to tremble, so far it is unclear whether the GR Corolla will also be sold here.
- Toyota GR Corolla was introduced
- Could use the 261hp engine from the GR Yaris
- Brutally sporty design
- Available with all-wheel drive
- 272 hp power
- Sale in Europe still unclear
Toyota has developed a new GR Corolla inspired by the fantastic all-wheel-drive GR Yaris, which is capable of rallying.
The front can scare you a little. The huge grill, which lets a lot of air through for cooling, has the GR logo on the side. The fenders are flared, the front fenders have ventilation gills behind the wheel arches. Brake calipers painted red and the “GR-Four” lettering – which stands for all-wheel drive – clearly show that this is all about pure sporting pleasure.
The GR Corolla is designed as a five-door hatchback. The side view shows the huge rear spoiler, which gives the Corolla even more sporty. The exhaust system also immediately catches the eye. There is one tailpipe per cylinder, i.e. three – with an oval one in the middle.
To keep costs in check, the Toyota GR Corolla’s interior looks much like the layout of the current model. That’s not a bad thing, as the cockpit looks modern and uncluttered, with a large, centrally-mounted infotainment screen and digital driver display taking center stage.
However, the GR variant comes with some sporty upgrades, including body-hugging sports seats, GR logos, revised touchscreen menus, and aluminum pedals, just like the GR Yaris.
Toyota GR Corolla: engines and handling
Toyota uses the same engine as the GR Yaris – but the GR Corolla gets the Japanese version with 272 hp. In Europe, the GR Yaris “only” comes with 261 hp. Under the hood is a 1.6-liter turbocharged three-cylinder.
It was assumed that only front-wheel-drive would be available, but we were wrong. The GR Corolla is offered with an all-wheel drive.
Toyota GR Corolla: prices and the start of sales
Toyota unveiled the GR Corolla on April 1, 2022, in the United States. It is still unclear whether he will even leap to Europe. After all, there are the GR Yaris in this country. We’ll have to wait.
